Expert tips for Christmas entertaining

Looking for serving and entertaining essentials? Our Food Director Fran Abdallaoui shares her insider tips:

Pavlova plates

“I’m known to bring a pavlova to every gathering as it ticks all the boxes – it’s gluten-free and easily decorated with lush vanilla cream and summer fruit,” says Fran. “Our Test Kitchen tip is to bake the pavlova on the plate you’re going to serve it on so you don’t risk it cracking the fragile meringue when transferring it. Make sure the plate is ovenproof and sturdy, like this Maxwell & Williams Basics Pavlova Plate.”

Cake stands

Cake stands are not just for cakes! They are truly multipurpose and makes whatever you are serving a little bit fancy!” Fran explains. “I use them for all sorts of things – small cheese platters, desserts and sweet treats – even a glazed half ham standing upright.”

Roasting pans

“Usually, I roast a turkey or pork loin for Christmas and my go-to vessel is a heavy based roasting pan with a trivet. It allows the heat to circulate evenly for perfect browning. And because they have a heavy base and are flameproof, you can save all the pan juices and make gravy directly in the pan without losing any of those delicious crispy bits on the bottom of the pan.”

What is the best way to prepare for Black Friday?

Start early: Create wishlists on your favourite retailer websites and add your must-haves to your cart for lightning-fast checkout. Many sites let you save items or create accounts that remember your preferences.

Do your homework: Research regular prices for products you’re eyeing – screenshot them or jot down the usual cost. This way, you’ll instantly recognise genuine bargains versus inflated “discounts.” Check price history tools if available, and read reviews while you’re not under pressure.

Set a realistic budget: Decide how much you can spend and stick to it. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and overspend on “deals” you don’t actually need.

Sign up for alerts: Subscribe to newsletters from your favourite brands and retailers. Follow them on social media too – many announce flash sales or early access codes to their followers first.

Plan your strategy: Map out which stores you’ll hit first. Online shopping often starts earlier and runs longer than in-store deals. Consider which retailers offer the best return policies in case you change your mind.

Prepare for the technical side: Update your payment details, ensure your delivery address is correct and clear your browser cache. Have backup payment methods ready in case your first choice doesn’t work during peak traffic.

Use expert guides: Bookmark curated roundups like this one! We’ll be updating our recommendations throughout the sales period, highlighting the deals actually worth your time and money.

With top deals often selling out within hours (or minutes), this preparation can mean the difference between snagging your dream purchase and missing out entirely.

What is Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two of the biggest shopping events of the year, offering unbeatable discounts across countless categories.

Black Friday kicks off the frenzy the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., and while it started as an American tradition, it’s become hugely popular in Australia. Cyber Monday follows right after, extending the savings into the online shopping realm, making it a prime time to snap up last-minute deals.

These events are the perfect opportunity for shoppers to score big on electronics, fashion, homewares and more – just in time to get ahead on holiday shopping without breaking the bank.

What date is Black Friday 2025?

In 2025, the Black Friday sales weekend starts on Friday November 28, with Cyber Monday following on December 1. However, many retailers keep the momentum going throughout November, launching early sales and sometimes extending deals beyond Cyber Monday (if stock is still available!).

How does this compare to other sales events?

Black Friday has become just as big as Boxing Day for retailers in Australia. In fact, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates that people have actually changed when they do their Christmas shopping to make the most of Black Friday deals.

In a statement about higher consumer spending in November 2023 than in December 2023, Ben Dorber, ABS head of retail statistics said: “Consumers brought forward some of their usual December spending to November to take advantage of Black Friday sales.

“This shift in spending from December to November reflects the growing popularity of Black Friday sales and the impact of cost-of-living pressures, with consumers seeking out bargains and taking advantage of discounts in November.”

Part of what sets Black Friday apart from other sales events is the sheer scale of it, with some of the biggest discounts of the year across a wide range of categories, from kitchen appliances to fashion and more. With Cyber Monday also following closely behind, it’s an ideal time to get a jump on your Christmas shopping and avoid the hectic rush we all know comes in December.

How many Black Fridays are there in 2025?

There is only one official Black Friday (falling on November 28 this year). Although, many retailers extend their sales beyond just that day, giving you discounts throughout the week leading up to it and often continuing into Cyber Monday and beyond. So, while there’s only one “Black Friday,” the sales frenzy can last much longer.
