Is it cheaper to buy a coffee machine?

Buying a coffee machine can definitely save you money in the long run, especially if you’re someone who enjoys daily coffee shop visits.

While there’s an upfront cost, having your own machine allows you to make your favourite drinks at home for a fraction of the price.

As a basic example, buying one $7 coffee from a café each week would cost you around $364 over a year (not including any surcharges). That’s more than the cost of some of the coffee machines on our list, which range from around $150 to $999.

It’s worth noting you would have a couple of other ongoing costs, including coffee beans, ground coffee or capsules, milk and energy costs. But on a per-cup basis, these costs are less than what you’d pay for coffee from a café (where they also have to factor in other expenses, such as staff pay). So the savings from making coffee at home compared to at a café can increase over time. Not to mention, you can experiment with different recipes and flavours without the extra expense of café prices.

If you love your coffee and want to enjoy it more often, investing in a quality machine can be a smart move that pays off over time.

Why are coffee machines so expensive?

Coffee machines can be a bit pricey, but that’s because they pack in all sorts of advanced tech and quality materials to deliver great flavour and last a long time. Features like precision brewing, built-in grinders and milk frothers don’t come cheap! The brand name and sleek design also play a price in bumping up prices.

But not to worry – our roundup above should help soften the blow, with some great picks that offer amazing value without skimping on quality.
